Falls occur frequently in nursing homes, leading to other medical complications with devastating effects. An elderly person who sustains a fall is more likely to suffer from a fracture, which can lead to immobility and put the elderly resident at risk for the development of pressure sores and other problems. The nursing home has an obligation to identify and assess the resident’s risk for falls. Those most at risk should be monitored closely, given preventative devices such as low mattresses and bed and wheelchair alarms, and receive assistance with transfers to prevent them from falling.
